Abstract

This article is a keynote speech delivered by Professor Fatma Moussa at the Fifth International Symposium on Comparative Literature: Translation, in 1998. It was published in the Symposium Proceedings, edited by Mohamed Enani and Mohamed Abdel Atty in 1999. The speech is preceded with a foreword written by Hoda Elsadda.
Professor Moussa was a critic of Arabic and English literature. She was also a translator who translated Shakespeare into Arabic, and translated Naguib Mahfouz into English. In the keynote speech, Professor Moussa (1927-2007) reflects on her experience as a student and as a member of staff in the department of English in the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University. She belongs to the first generation of Egyptians appointed in the department in 1951. She recounts her memories of the first years in the department against the backdrop of social and political transformations in Egypt in the twentieth century. Her reflections on various historical junctures in the history of the department of English provides invaluable insights into the development of English studies in the global south.
